Please read all information thoroughly!
This Workshop includes a pre-recorded class and a custom kit, so you are able to work on your own time at your own pace, and still benefit from the feeling of Live instruction with questions and answers from past workshop participants. The video is casual and unedited.
In this workshop you will learn to make a full-size, long-handled broom. This demonstration highlights how to attache broomcorn to the handle, stitch the bristle flat, and weave the cap where the broomcorn meets the handle.
The class is intended to be completed over multiple days; the first day will be for attaching the bristle to the handle, the second will be for stitching and weaving. In the days between, your bristle should dry fully.
Your kit will include:
- approximately 1.5 lb of broomcorn of your choice (natural, black, or mixed)
- a kiln-dried PNW hardwood handle
- broomcorn stalks for weaving
- tarred twine for constructing your bristle
- colored twine of your choice for stitching and weaving
- a stitching clamp
- a stitching needle
- a workshop prep pamphlet
Other tools you will need:
- a drill
- a lighter
- a dowel to use as your foot brake
- a sharp knife
- sharp scissors
- a hand towel
*If you choose to provide your own special handle, here are some tips: make sure the wood is dried and cured, comfortably fits in your hand, sand off any protruding nubs that interfere with your grip, and the stick should measure about to your belly button from the floor.
You will be prompted to select your broomcorn and twine colors after you click “purchase”
For international orders, choose the “Local Pickup” option and include your address and phone number in the notes. In order to give you the fairest rates, we will bill you separately for S&H! Please contact us prior to purchasing for any shipping questions.
