Nov 7 & 8 - Witch's Besoms
Please read all information carefully; there’s important stuff in here!
This class will take place on Zoom on Saturday, November 7th and Sunday November 8th at 11 am Pacific, and will takeabout three hours each day.
You are invited to explore the oldest roots of broom craft through the making of a woven Witch’s Besom. Long associated with protection, ritual, and the tending of thresholds, the Besom carries centuries of tradition in its structure and form.
Together, we’ll create a classic Witch’s Besom entirely by hand using longstanding traditional techniques, with a focus on weaving the cap of the broom. Though this class you’ll leave with a broom that feels powerful to use and is beautiful to look at, with a deeper connection to the process that shaped it.
This class does not include materials. You will need to gather:
- 16-20 oz broomcorn hurl - I use 18-20 inch
- a handle
- broomcorn stalks for weaving - these can be separated from craft broomcorn if loose stalks are not available, or reed is another option.
- approx. 30ft tarred twine for constructing your bristle - I use 19 gauge nylon
- approx 30 ft colored twine (or the same tarred twine) of your choice for stitching and weaving
- a dowel or other footbrake
- a stitching needle
- a lighter
- a sharp knife
- sharp scissors
- a wide-tooth comb
- a lidded container for soaking your stalks
- a hand towel
Optional but helpful:
- a gardening glove for your dominant hand
- a hand/spring clamp
- a drill
Cost includes admission to the Zoom class, and a recording sent afterward.
An email will be automatically sent to you when you order, detailing how to log in and other tips to prepare for class in advance.
Make sure to keep an eye on your Spam or Junk folders to make sure you don’t miss the prep email.
You must be signed up to receive email updates in order to receive the prep email. Without the prep email, you won’t have access to the class.
